Are You an Ideal Candidate for Invisalign®?
When teeth need to be straightened and aligned, there might be an option other than traditional metal braces. Invisalign® is a system of retainers that are clear and that are easier to deal with than braces. However, not everyone is an ideal candidate for using Invisalign®.
Ideal candidates first and foremost do not need extensive work on their teeth. Instead, they require minor adjustments that can be accommodated by Invisalign® retainers. These minor dental problems include overcrowded teeth, an overbite, an underbite, a crossbite, or minor gaps. More serious problems require traditional braces and possibly additional measures.
Ideal candidates are also adults and teens, whose mouths have stopped growing. Children whose mouths are still growing and changing cannot use the Invisalign® system. The rule of thumb used to determine when a child can be considered for Invisalign® is when their second set of permanent molars come in, which usually happens around the age of 12.
Smokers are also not considered ideal candidates for Invisalign®. Smoking will stain the retainer, which defeats the purpose of it being invisible. It is also not advisable to remove the retainer as often as a smoker has a cigarette as the retainer will not effectively shift the teeth if it is taken out that often. A person must be committed to wearing the retainer 24 hours a day, except when eating or cleaning teeth.
If you feel that you fit into the category of the ideal candidate and you are ready to take your dental care very seriously, then discuss the option of Invisalign® with your orthodontist. You might just find that you end up turning a potentially negative experience into a very positive one. Invisalign® can truly change your life by altering your teeth in a way that suits your lifestyle. So enjoy your Invisalign® journey and enjoy your new smile.
